Stage One
Unit 1 Tell time to the half-hour (ACMMG020) Content: Tell time to the half-hour (ACMMG020) read analog and digital clocks to the half-hour using the terms 'o'clock' and 'half past' describe the position of the hands on a clock for the half-hour explain why the hour hand on a clock is halfway between the two hour-markers when the minute hand shows the half-hour (Communicating, Reasoning) describe everyday events with particular hour and half-hour times, eg 'We start school at 9 o'clock' (Communicating) record hour and half-hour time on analog and digital clocks |
Assessment task:
Using the Educreations app, upload some photos of real analog and digital clocks set to the half-hour and hour. Have the students record themselves reading the time of each clock. Students record their oral description of where the hands are positioned on a clock set to the half-hour. Students label a clock set to the half-hour with a brief explanation of where the hour and minute hands are positioned. Students draw a picture of what they might be doing at a given time, ie 9 am, 4:30 pm and record what they are doing orally. Set real digital and analog clocks to a given time (half hour and hour). Take a photo and upload to Educreations. Label the times in words from Gayle Pinn |
adaption
To adapt Gayle's example you could have them find pictures, you couold provide them with pictures or they could fill in outliens of clocks with the times and then you could record them using an Easi-speak mic or using a mic plugged intoa computer or even on your iPhone you could use Audioboo or Croak.it. Then upload the mp3 file and grab a QR code that links directly to it and stick it on their clock work sample.

Time
I have asked my year 1students to draw their favourite time both analog and digital then write about what they do then and why it is the best time of the day.
It assesses who knows the placement of numbers on clock ,who knows where hands go and which one if for the hour and minutes, who knows hour and half hour time who can recognise and write digital time. Allows for children to show what they know about minutes and hours eg one of my students said he liked 3.25 pm as he could swim after school .This shows understanding beyond grade expectations.
